I mentioned in my speech at the AGM that I wanted to bring transparency and more accountability to the Board and the role of Chairman. As part of that pledge, I will be sending an email to the Community every month with an update on key projects and how they are progressing. This is the first one.
This month I want to update on several key initiatives from the Board to make us more accessible, as well as some of the key projects which are progressing - and for which we will need your support!
As promised, please see our Who's Who page for the Board committee structure, the areas covered, some of the projects each committee will be looking at, and the key contacts for those areas. I hope that having this information will spark some interest - I would really like as many people from the community involved in one way or another. I do not see the Board as an exclusive club which puts on functions and events into which you have little input and to which you have little interest. We are a community and the events and programmes that are put on should reflect the things that you want to be involved in and go to. As such, we really need your feedback and input and I, and the whole team, would be delighted to hear from you.
As you may know, as part of our efforts around transparency and accountability, Vice-Chairman Ronnie Palester is organising Board surgeries, where a member of the Board and an Honorary Officer will be available to discuss Shul matters on the second Sunday of each month. Meetings will be by prior registration. Do look out for details in the next couple of weeks for the first surgery.
I am also delighted to let you know about some key projects which are underway:
The first is the inaugural event for the Barnet Shul Whisky Club, taking place at 8pm on Thursday 10 July at the Shul, with net proceeds going to Shaare Tzedek. Tickets are great value at £25 a head for five malt whiskies. Watch out for the flyer which will be published soon.
We are now starting serious planning for the Barnet Shul Shabbat UK. See here and here for some background. Further details to follow on this, but I know several people have ideas and I would urge you to speak to or email Ronnie Palester or the Rabbi to get involved.
We are also putting together a Shul band, which will be led by Simon Brunert. The idea is to allow like-minded individuals to practice and perhaps perform together. We might even challenge other Shuls in the area to a Battle of the Bands for charity in time (Hadley Wood are, apparently, up for it!). I know Simon is also keen on opening up practice sessions to children to join in. So if you are in any way musical and fancy having a go (no prior experience necessary), please email Simon to register your interest.
There's lots more going on, but in the interests of keeping this email short, I will stop there. Do speak to me or Ronnie if you have any issues or concerns, and please do email any of the committee leaders with ideas and projects you'd like to see run. They would also love your support!
