Children's Activities: Growing up in Barnet
Barnet is a warm, friendly shul for families with children of all ages, where children are an integral part of shul life. We encourage children to feel comfortable in the shul. We believe that if we nurture a child’s Jewish awareness, and give them a strong sense of belonging they will be set up with the tools for life to contribute to activities in Jewish society and develop their full potential.
Every week, from pre-school through the primary school years, a team of volunteer parents organise and run services for differing ages immediately after the haftarah. In these services, children can develop their confidence in the shul and start to feel comfortable in the surroundings whilst having fun with play, stories and of course some prayer. Children who start off shy and quiet soon join in with all the others and enjoy the interaction, play and prayer.
At the end of the services, they join the whole community. There is a special area for their Kiddush within the main shul area.
For pre-school children there is also a weekly toddler music group, held in the shul.
Aside from the weekly programme, each Yom Tov has separate services that take place, in addition to special events such as a family day at Pesach, Chanukah events and a Purim party.

B'nei Mitzvah
When the time comes for Bnei Mitzvah, we understand that each child’s family is different, and we strive to personalize this important event so that it is meaningful, enjoyable and inspirational for the boy or girl concerned. In this vein, we have developed a number of options for each member and further details of specific arrangements available can be obtained via the shul office requesting a Bar / Bat Mitzvah information pack.
We feel that learning to read their portion is an important part of a boy’s preparation for his Bar Mitzvah as well as his life as a Jewish adult. We therefore try to help encourage them gain an understanding of Torah and Haftarah and to come together with their fathers and the Rabbi for the special Bar Mitzvah breakfasts in the year leading up to their Bar Mitzvah.
For the girls, to supplement their learning within the Dvar Torah, we have set up the Barnet Bat Mitzvah Club (B.B.C.) to strengthen and enhance their Jewish identity and commitment.
